1. When Faith Met Floating Engineering

Floating Gurudwara for 550th Prakash Purab of Guru Nanak Dev Ji
in the night

In 2019, the Government of Punjab planned a grand and historic celebration for the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji.

The vision was unique.

A Floating Gurudwara that would travel across rivers, bringing spiritual experiences directly to people in different towns and villages.

The project was awarded to CS Direkt Events & Exhibitions Pvt Ltd by Punjab Govt.

However, there was one major challenge.

CS Direkt had strong expertise in land-based events — but no experience in floating infrastructure or water-based execution.

To bridge this gap, they onboarded a naval consultant, who eventually connected them with Acquafront Infrastructure Private Limited (AIPL).

This marked the beginning of a crucial collaboration.

A Unique Engineering Situation

  • The client lacked technical clarity in floating systems
  • Competitors avoided the project due to high uncertainty
  • The event required both engineering precision and cultural sensitivity

Instead of just supplying a product, AIPL had to take full ownership — from concept understanding to execution strategy.

2. The Challenge: A Moving Floating Structure Across Rivers

A large, modular floating Gurudwara platform, engineered by AIPL using SIFJ (Steel-Integrated Floating Jetty) technology, is being installed on the Sutlej River for the 550th Guru Nanak Dev Ji Jayanti celebrations.

This project was unlike conventional floating installations.

It wasn’t static.

It was mobile, multi-location, and continuous for 2 months.

Hydrological and Site Conditions

Waterbody Type
A combination of rivers and calm stretches (Sutlej & Beas)

Water Depth Range
1 – 10 meters

Current Conditions
Up to 3 m/s (strong river currents)

Draft Constraints
Low draft requirement (~1 meter)

Operational Requirements

The floating Gurudwara had to:

  • Be deployed at ~30 different locations
  • Stay operational for 2–3 days at each site
  • Be towed safely between locations
  • Maintain structural stability in flowing river conditions

Scale Challenge

This project was 10× larger than AIPL’s previous work experience.

  • Previous project: ~50 m²
  • This project: 500+ m² scale deployment

Scaling up introduced:

  • Structural complexity
  • Logistics challenges
  • Stability risks in dynamic water conditions

Time Constraint

Despite the scale, the entire project had to be completed in:

  • ~2 months (fabrication + deployment)

While typical projects of this size take 12-24 months, AIPL had to deliver in record time.

3. The AIPL Solution: Modular Mobile Floating Gurudwara Using SIFJ

SIFJ (Steel-Integrated Floating Jetty) technology.

AIPL engineered a modular floating Gurudwara platform using SIFJ (Steel-Integrated Floating Jetty) technology.

The solution was designed not just for floating — but for movement, adaptability, and repeated deployment.

Why SIFJ Was Selected

  • Ideal for medium load applications
  • Highly cost-effective
  • Modular design allowed easy relocation
  • Capable of operating in low-draft water bodies
  • Strong enough for continuous towing operations

Engineering Philosophy

The system was designed for mobility and reliability:

  • Steel-integrated framework for strength
  • Modular floating units for flexibility
  • Structural system optimized for repeated assembly/disassembly
  • Designed to withstand both static and dynamic loads

Design Standards Followed

  • IS 800
  • IS 875
  • BS 6349 Part 6
  • IRC 6
  • IMO guidelines

Load Cases Considered

  • Dead load of the structure
  • Live load (people, stage setup)
  • Environmental loads (river current, wind)
  • Dynamic loads during towing

Stability & Buoyancy Strategy

The platform was engineered to remain:

  • Stable under maximum load conditions
  • Safe during the stationary and towing phases
  • Functional even in shallow draft conditions

Mooring Strategy

Two anchoring approaches were used:

  • Danforth anchors for mid-water positioning
  • 2-point deck-to-shore mooring for shore-based events

Corrosion Protection

Given the short project duration, marine-grade protective coatings were used for corrosion resistance.

4. Technical Configuration of the Floating Platform

A large, modular floating Gurudwara platform, engineered by AIPL using SIFJ (Steel-Integrated Floating Jetty) technology

The executed system consisted of two identical modular floating platforms.

Platform Configuration

Platform Size
24 m × 12 m (each)

Number of Modules
24 modules per platform

Module Size
2 m × 6 m

Total Floating Area
288 m² per platform

Structural Design Parameters

Design Live Load
20 tonnes

Total Structural Capacity
50 tonnes

Operating Freeboard
0.6 meters

Design Life
10 years

Mooring System

  • Danforth anchoring system for mid-water stability
  • 2-point shore mooring for event execution

Access System

Access to the floating Gurudwara was provided through boats, ensuring flexibility across different locations.

5. Execution Under Extreme Mobility Constraints

A large, modular floating Gurudwara platform, engineered by AIPL using SIFJ (Steel-Integrated Floating Jetty) technology.

This project required not just installation — but continuous relocation and reinstallation.

Fabrication & Manufacturing

Fabrication Location
Kanpur

Materials Used

  • Mild Steel structure
  • HDPE floating components

Transportation

Modules were transported via road trailers to Punjab.

Installation Methodology

  • Cranes deployed modules into the water
  • Modular assembly completed on-site
  • Each installation is completed within 2–3 days

Operational Execution

  • The platform is installed at a location
  • The event was conducted for 2–3 days
  • Structure dismantled and towed to the next site
  • Process repeated across ~30 locations

Key Innovation

Modularity enabled mobility.

Without a modular floating design, such a project would not have been feasible.

6. The Result: A Moving Spiritual Landmark on Water

Floating Gurudwara for 550th Prakash Purab of Guru Nanak Dev Ji

The floating Gurudwara became one of the most unique highlights of the 550th Guru Nanak Dev Ji Jayanti celebrations.

Operational Performance

  • Successfully operated for 2 continuous months
  • Stable under river currents up to 3 m/s
  • Performed reliably across multiple installations
  • Maintained structural integrity throughout

  • The Punjab Government actively participated
  • Even the Chief Minister attended the celebrations
  • Created a historic and memorable experience

Client Outcome

  • Delivered beyond expectations
  • All challenges handled smoothly
  • High satisfaction with AIPL’s execution

This success directly led to repeat business, including the next project — the floating stage in Bhopal.
