1. When a City Wanted to Celebrate on Water

In 2019, the Government of Madhya Pradesh planned a grand New Year celebration event on the iconic Upper Lake in Bhopal.

The event, named “Jashn-e-Bhopal – Light and Sound Show”, aimed to create a unique cultural experience by hosting live performances on a floating stage in the middle of the lake.

The project was awarded to C S Direkt Events & Exhibitions Pvt Ltd, a well-known event management company that had previously collaborated with Acquafront Infrastructure Private Limited (AIPL).

This collaboration was built on trust.

Earlier, AIPL had successfully executed a landmark project for the same client — a Floating Gurudwara built to commemorate the 550th Guru Nanak Dev Ji Jayanti.

Because the first project was delivered successfully, the client once again approached AIPL to engineer the floating infrastructure required for this ambitious event.

However, this time the challenge was very different.

This was not just a floating structure.

It was a live performance stage in open water, carrying dozens of performers, lighting systems, sound equipment, and large visual screens.

2. The Challenge: Building a Performance Stage in a Large Lake

Upper Lake in Bhopal is one of the largest water bodies in central India.
Its scale and wind exposure create conditions closer to a small reservoir rather than a calm pond.

Hydrological and Site Conditions

Waterbody Type
Large inland lake

Water Depth Range
1 – 10 meters

Wave Conditions
Wave height up to 0.5 meters

Wind Effects

High wind speeds generated significant drag forces, especially because the stage included large visual screens and lighting systems.

This created a unique engineering problem.

Performance Requirements

The floating platform had to support safely:

  • More than 50 dancers performing simultaneously
  • Stage structures and decorations
  • Sound and lighting equipment
  • Large screen installations

The structure had to remain stable even when performers were dancing dynamically.

Operational Constraints

The project also had strict logistical constraints:

  • Installation window: only 2 days
  • Public safety requirements were extremely high
  • Stability certification was mandatory
  • The platform had to remain stationary in the middle of the lake

These requirements meant the floating system had to be engineered with high structural stability and reliable anchoring.

3. The AIPL Solution: Modular Floating Stage Using SIFJ Technology

The AIPL Solution: Modular Floating Stage Using SIFJ Technology in Jashn-e-Bhopal

To address these challenges, AIPL engineered a modular floating platform using its SIFJ (Steel-Integrated Floating Jetty) system.

The solution combined structural rigidity with modular flexibility to support event infrastructure safely.

Why SIFJ Was Selected

  • Suitable for medium load applications
  • Highly economical compared to conventional barges
  • Modular configuration allowed rapid installation
  • Stable performance in low-draft inland water bodies
  • Easy dismantling and reuse for temporary events

Engineering Philosophy

The design followed a modular structural approach:

  • Steel structural framework for load distribution
  • Integrated flotation system for buoyancy
  • Modular configuration allowing rapid assembly
  • Structural design optimized for dynamic live loads

Design Standards Followed

The floating platform system was engineered according to:

  • IS 800
  • IS 875
  • BS 6349 Part 6
  • IRC 6
  • IMO guidelines

Load Cases Considered

Engineering calculations accounted for:

  • Dead load of the platform structure
  • Live load from performers and stage equipment
  • Environmental loads including wind and waves
  • Dynamic movement loads from dance performances

Stability & Buoyancy Strategy

The platform was designed to remain stable under maximum load conditions while maintaining adequate freeboard.

Mooring Strategy

A multi-point mooring system was implemented to keep the platform stationary despite strong winds and drag forces created by large stage screens.

Corrosion Protection

Since the project was a short-term event installation, corrosion protection was achieved using marine-grade protective paint coatings.

4. Technical Configuration of the Floating Platform

The final executed system included a modular floating stage designed for performance applications.

Platform Configuration

Platform Size
24 m × 12 m

Number of Modules
24 modules

Individual Module Size
2 m × 6 m

Total Floating Area
288 m²

Structural Design Parameters

Design Live Load
20 tonnes

Total Structural Capacity
50 tonnes

Operating Freeboard
0.6 meters

Design Life
10 years

Mooring System

Multi-point anchoring arrangement designed to:

  • Counteract wind forces
  • Reduce drift caused by screen drag
  • Maintain stage alignment during performances

Access System

Access to the floating stage was provided through boats, allowing performers and technical crew to reach the platform safely.

5. Execution Under Tight Event Deadlines

AIPL executed the project under strict time constraints and complex logistics.

AIPL executed the project under strict time constraints and complex logistics.

Fabrication & Manufacturing

Fabrication Location
Kanpur

Materials Used

  • Mild Steel structural system
  • HDPE flotation components

Transportation

The modular units were transported by road trailers to the installation site in Bhopal.

Installation Methodology

The deployment process included:

  • Cranes placing modules into the lake
  • Modular connection of floating units
  • Assembly of the complete platform on water

Installation Highlights

  • Complete modular deployment
  • Installation completed within just 2 days
  • High stability achieved despite windy conditions

After AIPL installed the floating platform, the event production team built the stage set, lighting, and decorative structures on top of the floating deck.

During the event, AIPL engineers remained present on-site to ensure smooth operation and provide technical support if required.

6. The Result: A Landmark Floating Celebration

The floating stage successfully hosted the Jashn-e-Bhopal New Year Celebration, featuring live music, dance performances, and a large light-and-sound experience.

Operational Performance

  • Platform remained stable during live dance performances
  • Successfully supported 50+ performers
  • Maintained position despite wind-induced drag forces
  • Fully operational throughout the event

Public & Client Response

The event became a major attraction.

For many visitors and tourists, it was the first time witnessing a live cultural performance staged on water in Bhopal.

The project received positive response from both the public and the organizing authorities.

Post-Event Process

After successful completion of the celebration:

  • AIPL dismantled the modular platform
  • All modules were retrieved from the lake
  • Equipment was transported back safely

Because the system was modular, dismantling was efficient and the floating infrastructure could be reused for future projects.

Value Delivered

  • Rapid 2-day installation
  • High stability for dynamic performances
  • Cost-effective modular solution
  • Safe public event infrastructure
  • Successful execution under challenging conditions

7. Technology Spotlight: SIFJ (Steel-Integrated Floating Jetty)SIFJ Technology by AIPL

SIFJ is AIPL’s modular floating infrastructure technology designed for medium to heavy load floating applications in inland water bodies.

  • Floating event stages
  • Water tourism infrastructure
  • Floating jetties and walkways
  • Temporary event platforms
  • Pump pontoons
  • Floating utility platforms

Engineering Compliance

SIFJ systems are designed based on project requirements and relevant engineering standards including:

  • IS 800

Indian and International Marine Design Codes followed by AIPL

Testing and validation may involve IRS, IIT, CIPET, and NABL-approved laboratories, depending on project requirements.

8. Key Learnings from the Project

Floating event docks require careful structural engineering to ensure safety during dynamic performances.

Modular floating platforms enable rapid installation and dismantling, making them ideal for temporary events.

Large stage screens can create significant wind drag, requiring multi-point anchoring systems.

SIFJ modular docks provide cost-effective solutions for medium-load floating applications in lakes and reservoirs.
